In this paper we present measurements of the vertical structure of the aerosol backscattering coefficient in the lower troposphere, which have been performed at the city of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, during the years 1996 and 1997. A ground-based backscatter lidar system operated throughout the year, mainly around local noon hours. Intensive lidar measurements have also been performed during certain occasions, in order to study the daily evolution of the lower troposphere over the urban area of Thessaloniki, and the existance of a Sahara dust layer over the measuring site. The lidar measurements were accompanied by measurements of the aerosol optical depth in the visible spectral region, using a CIMEL suntracking photometer. The seasonal evolution of the aerosol loading and its vertical extension in the urban lower troposphere over Thessaloniki is discussed. From the analysis of these studies the evolution of the boundary layer over the site is described, and with the sunergy of the sun photometer measurements, conlcusion are made on the origin and the possible characterization of the "lidar determined" aerosol layers. Two cases are also presented, when dust lifted from Sahara desert was transported over the measuring site. The height of this layer was determined between 3-4 km and the optical depth at 532 nm of the Sahara dust layer was found to be of the order of 0.1. | [keywords]
